Wetland Update

Dalrymple Wet land reserve was shortlisted in the Climate and Net Zero category for Scotland loves Local awards hosted on the 28th of November 2023. We are delighted to announce that our village, and this project, took first place in the group –  https://lovelocal.scot/awards/ .

Wet-land habitat is a rare and threatened resource within Scotland. Dalrymple has been identified by SEPA as “at risk” from flooding in a recent Flood Risk Assessment exercise. The wet-land reserve offers many of rewards by furnishing an enriched habitat for wildlife, a recreational area for the village and a “runoff control” as defined within the EAC Flood Risk Management Strategy. Surface water flooding is offset by appropriate planting such that wet-land trees such as alder and willow will allow 17 times better water penetration of the ground when compared to a turf covered field. The plan also meshes with some of the ambitions outlined in the 2019-2024 Action plan (https://www.east-ayrshire.gov.uk/Resources/PDF/D/Dalrymple-Action-Plan.pdf) to which the whole village was invited to contribute.
